Independence Day is a Deadlands Dime Novel written by Matt Forbeck and Chris Snyder, with the original concept by Shane Lacy Hensley. It was originally published in 1997 with a short story featuring Ronan Lynch during Dodge City's Fourth of July celebrations and included a companion scenario for Deadlands Classic which allowed a posse to experience the same events as the novel. The short story was rereleased in 2011 without the accompanying companion scenario.

Publisher's SummaryEdit

Ronan and crew are hired by none other than Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson to keep the law in Dodge City on the Fourth of July. Angry Rebels and drunken mobs aren't the worst of the deputies' problems, however: the Butcher has come to town!

The original 1997 release included the following sentence:

This Dime Novel includes a full-length novella and a Deadlands adventure.

The 2011 rerelease replaced that sentence with the following:

This is the second Dime Novel in the legendary Deadlands series, following the adventures of Ronan Lynch, Bad Luck Betty, and Velvet Van Helter. It contains the fiction only of the original and all new art. These new editions of the Dime Novels do not contain adventure material for the Deadlands Roleplaying Game.

References in Other WorksEdit

The Prospector's Story in the original Deadlands: The Weird West Roleplaying Game references the origins of The Butcher by saying that "some kinda butcher snuck into one of the [Confederate] hospitals and started carvin' up the survivors of Pickett's Charge."

The third Dime Novel, Night Train takes place mere days after this one and again features Ronan Lynch (initially with his arm severed as it was at the end of this story) and Hank "One Eye" Ketchum.
